In plain English:

Random punters on the [furryclan] server are right and [furryclan] members were wrong. YES, tangos can hear gunfire and may then rush off to execute hostages. They will also do so when they see players.

This article has proven through anecdotal testing and reverse engineering of actual game code that YES, tangos can hear gunfire and may kill hostages or detonate bombs when they do. Only certain tangos are programmed to do so but they won't always. There is a probability of them taking action which varies with the game difficulty.

And, as much as I dislike being proven wrong, proving MYSELF wrong turned out to be an interesting and rewarding experience.
